Are we prisioner in our own home?
"Happiness needs the warmth of one's home. It cannot be taken from someone else's garden." -
Kate Morton
My name is Fernando Flores; I am teacher who comes to talk
to you about the discrepancies in society about the meaning of a home. In the last few days, we
have been "forced" to stay at home, due to a pandemic that is ravaging humanity, and this
condition is testing us as human beings. I have heard many say that they can no longer bear
the fact of being in their own home, "locked up", or that they no longer know what else to do.
Interpersonal intelligence is self-knowledge, understanding who we are, being able to identify our
emotions, feelings and act on them accordingly. But where am I going with all this, Vernon Baker
said: "Home is where the heart can laugh without shyness. Home is where the heart's tears can
dry at its own pace." In other words, our home is the perfect place to be ourselves, to be able
to relax, to spend time with our loved ones, to grow, to learn; it is our sanctuary and we should
be happy to be there. Every time we are sad, it is at home that we cry, every time we are
angry, it is home that shelters us, every time we are happy, it is at home that we dream; it is
that place that sees us developing since we are little, it is our blank canvas, our diary, that
history book that represents us, and which we should treasure.
Sometimes we forget what really matters, we forget and we put others above us, but when we
are at home we are kings, queens, we are whoever we want to be, no matter what others say.
The place we call home inspires us to realize our dreams and hopes, and it usually has a
special place in your heart, just as you are an essential part of it, its complement.
In the end, home is not only where it´s that person super dear to you, but the place where you
find yourself, where you know that no matter what, it is you and no one else.
